Meerabai was born in the late 15 th century to Rana Ratan Singh, the Rajput king of Medta in Rajasthan. It is believed that as a very young girl she saw a marriage procession and asked her mother who her husband was. Her mother pointed to a statue of Lord Krishna and from that day, Meera believed she was indeed his wife. When she turned 18, she was married to Raja Bhoj, the crown price of Mewad, but she never thought of him as her husband since she believed that she, was already another's; Lord Krishna's.
It is said that she was treated very badly by her in-laws, that they tried to poison her but she survived because the Lord protected her. In later years she left her in-law's home and wandered around singing songs in praise of Krishna and acquired the status of a saint poetess and a large following. More than 5000 poems that are popularly sung till today are said to be written by her.
