The
word Chaumasa means four months and so these songs are
devoted to the four months of monsoon, 'Aashad', 'Sawan',
'Bhadon' & 'Kwar'. They usually voice the cry of a lonely
wife. Separation forms the most common refrain of these
songs.
A very large percentage of the men of this area take up
employment in far away towns and come back home during
these months. Houses need repair, the new crop needs to
be sown - after this is done - they leave again. Chaumasa
songs represent the anguish of the women whose husbands
don't return.
