A sanskrit
word- Jagar means to 'wake'. In this - a spirit is invoked
in a living person's body. There are two kinds of Jagars
- one invoking the 'ghost' of a dead person and the other
invoking the spirit of a God or Goddess.
The Jagar is closely linked to beliefs of religious justice
- so often a Jagar is organized as a way to seek penance
for a crime or seek justice on any matter from the Gods.
The main singer is called the 'Jagariya' and the person
in whose body the spirit is invoked- the 'Dangariya'.
The Jagar is held at night and there are some that last
as long as 11 nights. Its subjects consist of many local
ballads and references from the Mahabharat and its tempo
slowly increases and when it reaches fever pitch the Dangariya
starts a kind of frenzied dance.
