Very
popular in the Kumaon region of UP - Nyoli is considered
a forest song.
One of the meanings of the word Nyoli is a special kind
of Hill Nightingale - which is seen as a symbol of separation
from the lover.
She is said to fly around in the deep forest, singing
in search of her lover.
This actually captures the essence of the Nyoli songs
which are primarily love songs - describing the anguish
of 'separation'. They have a very slow rhythm which makes
the anguish even more pronounced.
